Whether your toilet isn’t flushing or the sink is overflowing, a blocked drain is one of the worst scenarios for any commercial or residential property owner. You’ll be pleased to know that here at Alderbrook Plumbing, we’re experts in maintenance plumbing. So, we’ve put together a guide covering several ways to clear blocked drains, toilets and showers so that you can avoid an expensive mess.
Use white vinegar and baking soda
If you’ve got a blocked drain on your hands and are looking for an urgent fix, you should try clearing the shower drain blockage with a cup of white vinegar and baking soda. This natural, homemade remedy is a brilliant alternative to harsh chemical products. To give it enough time to work, you should use vinegar and baking soda when the shower’s not going to be in use for a couple of hours.
All you need to do is pour half a cup of baking soda down the blocked drain followed by half a cup of vinegar. There will be some fizzing, but don’t worry, that’s perfectly normal.
Use boiling water
Boiling water is a great alternative to chemical-based cleaners for clearing out common shower and sink blockages like soap scum and debris. Simply bring half a gallon of water to the boil and pour it down your drain. You can check to see if this has worked by turning on your tap and seeing if the water drains freely. If it’s still taking a while to drain away, repeat the process.
Use a plunger to unclog shower drains
A toilet plunger can be used to help clear larger blockages and clogs. For the best results, make sure the plunger covers the drain opening. If you want a tighter seal, smear petroleum jelly at the bottom of the plunger’s rim. Then, fill the shower tub with water, enough to cover the rim. After this, push the plunger downwards and upwards to create suction. Finally, pour boiling water down the drain to clear it.
